Court Martial Clears Air Traffic Controller
February 25, 2003
The decision of a Court Martial to clear RAF air traffic controller Flight Lieutenant Malcolm Williams of causing the deaths of two United States Air Force pilots whose F15 jets crashed into Ben Macdui during a snowstorm in March 2001 has been welcomed by his family.
The hearing at Helensburgh lasted 22 days and was one of the longest Courts Martial in recent years.
Following the verdict, Flt Lt Williams (known to his friends as Spot) said: “My sympathy and thoughts go to the families of the two pilots who lost their lives in this tragic accident - their loss is heartbreaking.
“Today’s verdict is a great relief. The last two years have been extremely stressful for me and my family and we are now looking forward to returning to some sense of normality.
“I am most grateful to my defence team for their outstanding professionalism and robust defence throughout this rigorously contested hearing. Through them I was able to answer all the allegations in public, ensuring that the cause of the accident was fully explored and my innocence established.
“I am pleased to emerge from this experience completely exonerated and wish to thank the hundreds of people who have sent messages of support from all over the world. In particular, I want to thank to my wife, family and friends.”
Flt Lt William’s wife Susan, speaking after the verdict, said: “No-one emerges from the ordeal of a court martial as a winner. Two fine pilots have lost their lives and our prayers continue to be extended to their wives and families.
“My husband and family have suffered a great deal of worry and anxiety over the last two years. The professionalism and good name of the RAF has also been brought into question.
“I now look forward to the inquiry demanded by GATCO (the Guild of Air Traffic Control Officers). This will be an appropriate forum to discuss recent events.
“We are exceptionally grateful to our huge band of supporters - family, friends, RAF personnel, my colleagues at High School of Dundee and aviation experts around the world. Their encouragement has enabled Spot to maintain his dignity throughout this ordeal.
“There were many occasion during the last 23-months that it felt like David fighting Goliath. Now we are relieved that the struggle is finally over.”
